The Cutting Ball Theater is always looking for driven, enthusiastic interns to work closely with our staff and artists.

We are accepting interns and volunteers for the following positions:

  • Arts Administration
  • Marketing / Social Media
  • Development
  • Directing
  • Literary / Dramaturgy
  • Stage Management
  • Design (Sets, Costumes, Sound & Lights)

These positions vary in time commitment but average 5-10 hours a week and can be flexible regarding a work or class schedule. These are unpaid internships.

Stage Management Fellowship for 2015-2016 Season:

The stage management fellowship provides a unique opportunity to learn all aspects of the work of a professional stage manager in a theatrical setting. Fellow will act as Assistant Stage Manager on all three of the main productions and will stage manage the staged readings within Cutting Ball’s RISK IS THIS… New Experimental Plays Festival and all additional Hidden Classics Reading Series events throughout the year.

Under the supervision of the Stage Manager, the Fellow will assist in all aspects of preparing for rehearsals, technical rehearsals and show runs. SM Fellow will work with the Stage Manager on drafting and managing schedules, learn AEA rules and regulations and attend networking events.

As a CB Fellow, you will be encouraged to not only work in your chosen field of study but also to delve into other areas of the production if necessary. Good communication skills, a highly organized and creative personality, and a sense of humor are essential. Position begins in August 2015 and runs through late June 2016. Computer and word processing skills are an asset.

Travel Stipend

Details of time commitment:

-Rehearsals often take place on weekdays in the evenings from 7pm – 10pm and weekend days in the afternoon.
-Shows run for five weeks and typically follow the following schedule: Thursday at 7:30pm, Friday/Saturday at 8pm, Saturday at 2pm and Sunday at 5pm.

Directing Internship – 2015-16 Season:

  • Intern will act as an Assistant Director on Cutting Ball’s three full productions in the 2015-16 Season.
  • Intern will assist with producing the RISK IS THIS Festival 2016 (experimental new play readings).
  • Intern will assist with leading pre and post-show talks.
  • Intern will manage casting (along with the Associate Producer) including for the Hidden Classics Reading Series and the RISK IS THIS New Experimental Plays Festival.
  • Intern will work in the office with with the administrative staff an average of 4 hours per week. This work will consist of casting duties as well as assisting Managing Director and General Manager with the day-to-day operations of Cutting Ball Theater.

Be a volunteer usher and see the show for free!

Ushers arrive 1h before curtain to assist in setting up the front of house, greet patrons and help them find their seats. The dress code is business casual. Each time you usher, you will get a free ticket to the performance which you can redeem immediately or on another day. If you decide not to see the show on the day you usher, you can leave right after curtain.

Fall Administrative and Development Intern (3 months between September and December 2015)

This position is ideal for candidates interested in the workings and running of a small non-profit arts organization. The Intern will gain experience in project management, grant/individual giving procedures and HR. The intern will do the following:

  • Assist in individual donations management such as donations tracking and acknowledgement.
  • Help compile and write final reports for grants. Research and identify potential new grants for Cutting Ball.
  • HR: write and send out Letters of Agreement and contracts for season contractors and maintain the contract database. Posting new job/internship openings on various websites.
  • Participate in our social media activity by posting daily on FB and Twitter platforms.
  • Assist in special events, such as Gala Opening Nights, various donor cultivation events and with mailings.
  • Assist in obtaining food and drink donations for various events.

Cutting Ball will offer the intern season membership for our 2015/16 season as well as a $250 travel stipend. Academic credit is also available. Hours will be 15h/week for 3 months between September and December 2015.

Spring Marketing & Community Outreach Intern (3 months between January and April 2016)

This position is ideal for candidates interested in multitasking and exploring the intersections between marketing, community engagement and communications in the performing arts world. The intern will do the following:

  • Identify and reach out to organizations, colleges and associations to promote our season and offer group rates.
  • Promote our no-cost student rush tickets to the academic community.
  • Assist Marketing and Community Outreach Manager in building key partnerships with community partners, promoting our pay-what-you-can tickets to neighborhood residents and workers in the Tenderloin and Central Market areas.
  • Participate in mailings and the distribution of Cutting Ball’s marketing materials (brochures and postcards).
  • Enter survey information in the audience databases and pull demographic reports to assess new attendance and evolution in our patrons’ profiles.
  • Participate in our social media activity by posting daily on FB and Twitter platforms. Create blog content and assist in writing new blog posts.
  • Assist in special events, such as Gala Opening Nights and other donor cultivation events.

Cutting Ball will offer the intern season membership for our 2015/16 season as well as a $250 travel stipend. Academic credit is also available. Hours will be 15h/week for 3 months between January and April 2016.

Light Board Operator/Electrics Intern

The Cutting Ball Theater is seeking a LBO/Electrics Intern for productions in their 2015-16 season. Inquire for precise dates.

Details of position: LBO/Electrics Intern will attend all technical rehearsals (TBD) and will tend to minor lighting notes or issues that occur during the run. LBO will operate the light board during the final week or tech and all scheduled performances. LBO must have knowledge of theatrical lighting. Prior experience as a theater electrician is preferred.

Typical performance schedule: 5-week run – Thursdays at 7:30pm, Fridays at 8pm; Saturdays at 8pm, Saturdays at 2pm and Sundays at 5pm.
